Hardening is a process of increasing the tensile strength and hardness of different components and tools that are used in industries for heavy duty purposes. This process involves heating of the tool or component to a predetermined temperature range and holding it to a temperature followed by rapid cooling. The hardness gained is due to the transformational change accompanied by rapid cooling.

 

The purpose of this hardening is to enable the steel tool to cut other metals easily and the hardness gained via this process of hardening and tempering also improves the wear resistance of these tools. This is generally used for processing of components like shafts, bearings and gears. Tensile and yield strengths are improved to a considerable range just by hardening the structure steel. Heating changes the mechanical and metallurgical properties of metals and this is used for softening, hardening and modifying the properties of different materials with different structures at varied temperature range.

 

Transformation basically depends on the temperature at which the material is heated and how long it is made to remain at the same temperature and the episodic time value of its cooling and to what temperature is it cooled and its speed of cooling. Hardened and quenched which further, in its secondary stage of heating (i. E. Tampering) of the material to a lower temperature for a longer duration.
